Theseus prepares for his marriage to Hippolyta, on the day of the new moon. There will be a four-day festival with entertainment. He hires the Master of Revels, Philostrate to find the entertainment. An Athenian Nobleman, Egeus, enters the court followed by his daughter Hermia and two young men. Egeus, wants his daughter, according to Athenian law, to marry Demetrius, (who loves Hermia) become a nun, or be put to death.
