Sumner was the first Black high school west of the Mississippi, nurturing artists like Chuck Berry, Tina Turner and Grace Bumbry. When it was recommended for closure, 4theVille and the Festival designed an arts residency program which was adopted in 2021. Revitalization efforts are underway.
